In the 1970s, Greenwood transitioned from a day job as a Las Vegas blackjack dealer to securing a Nashville record deal facilitated by Mel Tillis's bandleader. Greenwood brings a soulful delivery to emotional country ballads and is known for writing and performing the patriotic anthem God Bless the U.S.A., one of his most popular songs. He also released the albums American Patriot, Inside Out, and A Perfect 10.
