American rock band

Nirvana was an American rock band, founded in 1987 by lead vocalist Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic, with drummer Dave Grohl joining in 1990. Their debut album Bleach was released in 1989, followed by 1991's chart-topping landmark album Nevermind, which featured breakout single Smells Like Teen Spirit and became known for bringing grunge to mainstream audiences.

Additional albums by Nirvana include 1993’s In Utero and the Grammy-winning live album, MTV Unplugged In New York. Their most popular songs include Smells Like Teen Spirit, Come As You Are, Heart-Shaped Box, Lithium, and In Bloom, all of which have multi-platinum certifications.
Nirvana’s success continued beyond the 1994 passing of lead singer and songwriter Kurt Cobain, while drummer Dave Grohl found further global fame with rock band Foo Fighters. The band was inducted into the Roll and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014, and appear in documentaries 1991: The Year Punk Broke, Classic Albums: Nirvana - Nevermind, and the concert film Nirvana: Live At Reading.
