- AUG 22, 2025 Beethoven for Three: Symphony No. 1 — Op. 70, No. 1 "Ghost" — Op. 11 "Gassenhauer"
This is the fourth release in the Beethoven for Three series, whereby luminaries Leonidas Kavakos, Yo-Yo Ma, and Emanuel Ax present Beethoven’s symphonies in chamber form. The idea has proved so much more than a quirky experiment. So often, Beethoven’s underlying textures are lost in the orchestral fog where detail can be sacrificed on the altar of effect. But here we get to enjoy it all: Beethoven’s Haydn-esque drama and wit, and his extraordinary development of motifs and themes. All three musicians play with superb control and impeccable ensemble. But while Symphony No. 1 is this album’s headline work, there are some original works to enjoy too. Among them is one of Beethoven’s most famous chamber masterpieces, the “Ghost” Trio No. 5 in D Major, with its haunting, shimmering slow movement that lends the piece its name. The outer movements each possess a delightful energy that, like the symphony, have an effortless grace.
