George Michael had already headlined stadiums around the world as a member of the blockbuster pop duo Wham!, but on his first tour on his own he had something to prove. Faith, his first solo album, was a resounding statement that he’d grown up and was ready to fully showcase himself as a boundary-breaking musical auteur: “If you can listen to this album and not like anything on it, then you do not like pop music,” he said to Rolling Stone shortly before its release in 1987. The tour in support of it, which kicked off in early 1988, had a set list that further outlined Michael’s vision, mixing Faith cuts and a couple of Wham! chestnuts together with covers of Stevie Wonder’s “Love’s In Need of Love Today” and Wild Cherry’s “Play That Funky Music.” The Faith Tour, released in conjunction with a 2026 documentary, compiles two performances at Paris’ Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy into a single collection of previously unreleased material. Michael’s tight-knit tour band, which included bassist Deon Estus and saxophonist Andy Hamilton, stretches out on extended versions of “Everything She Wants” and “Careless Whisper,” while his strong yet supple vocal is as potent on the four-on-the-floor “Hard Day” as it is on the weepy “One More Try.” Michael had a singular path through music in the ’80s, making the transition from teen idol to adult superstar on his own terms, and The Faith Tour shows how his talents as a songwriter, singer, and showman propelled him to the top of the pops.
