American soul funk singer from NYC

Sharon Jones was an American soul funk singer who grew up in New York City. In Brooklyn as a teenager, she immersed herself in the 1970s disco and funk music scenes. She provided backup vocals for gospel, soul, disco, and blues artists and released singles on Desco Records with the band The Soul Providers in the late 1990s. Jones signed with Daptone Records in 2002 and released several songs with The Dap-Kings, including one of her most popular covers, Midnight Rider. Victor Axelrod released a popular remix of the Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings song How Long Do I Have to Wait for You?. Jones appeared in the documentaries Charles Bradley: Soul of America, Mavis!, and Miss Sharon Jones!. She passed away in 2016.
