The singer born Andrae Sutherland in St. Thomas Parish, Jamaica, has spent more than a decade bridging the gap between dancehall and pop. Since breaking through in 2010 with a feature on Vybz Kartel’s “Clarks,” the 37-year-old has lent his sunny melodies to collaborations with Drake, Young Thug, and Pusha T, while solo projects like 2014’s Where We Come From and 2020’s FIXTAPE established him at the forefront of contemporary dancehall. On Popcaan’s sixth album, Nothing Without God, he steps away from the slow-wine escapades for a set of mellow ballads about his own hero’s journey, guided by street smarts and divine grace. He preaches self-reliance on “Kick It Wid Myself,” gives thanks to God on the piano-driven title track, and beats the odds on “Greatness Inside Out”: “No care weh them fight me/A greatness a run inside.”
