The Detroit-born singer and rapper has always been a bit misunderstood—take 2015’s “I Took a Pill in Ibiza,” a bummer of a song about the emptiness of fame turned into a main-stage festival smash by an EDM remix. You get the sense Posner’s spent a lot of time trying to square how others see him with how he sees himself (for instance, during the 2,800-mile walk he took across America in 2019, fully burned out from the demands of the album promo cycle). Americana elements have steadily crept into his music over the past decade, but never more proudly than on Crazy Rainbow, which splits the difference between neo-funk dance numbers and twangy folk songs. The EP’s full of good advice from a guy dedicated to figuring out what this life thing’s all about, like on “Peach,” a ’90s throwback on the merits of touching grass: “If I don’t pick up my phone, I’m sorry,” he sings. “I’m probably eating a peach.”
