Evelyn Lear

American operatic soprano (1926-2012)

Evelyn Lear was an American operatic soprano. She made her European opera debut at the Berlin State Opera as the Composer in Richard Strauss's Ariadne auf Naxos in 1959. She originated the title role in Giselher Klebe's Alkmene in 1961 and the title role in Alban Berg's Lulu in a concert performance in 1960, as well as a number of other roles throughout her career.


Lear released several albums, including The Art of Evelyn Lear and Songs My Mother Taught Me. She also worked with her husband Thomas Stewart on the album Evelyn Lear & Thomas Stewart: A Musical Tribute, The Recitals. Lear appeared in the film Buffalo Bill and the Indians, or Sitting Bull’s History Lesson. She passed away in 2012.
