Laurel Aitken

Cuban-Jamaican singer (1927–2005)

Laurel Aitken was a Cuban-Jamaican singer (1927-2005). He helped popularize a mix of New Orleans-style R&B and the indigenous Jamaican folk style mento, a sound that would soon evolve into ska. In the 1960s, Aitken moved to the U.K. where his recordings on the Blue Beat label were popular among West Indian immigrants, mods, and skinheads. He also dabbled in rocksteady and reggae and released albums including Ska With LaurelEn Español, and Superstar. Some of his most popular songs include Boogie in My Bones, Sally Brown and Zion City Wall.
