Fans of Los Angeles beat-scene vanguard Flying Lotus (born Steven Ellison) are growing accustomed to a new side of the artist. Known for shapeshifting, jazz-inspired electronic compositions, Ellison has spent much of the 2020s diving into the expansive world of film scoring, serving up the soundtrack for 2021’s Yasuke anime series and his feature-length directorial debut, ASH. The latter combines his interest in sci-fi lore with the electronic soundscapes of his solo albums (2010’s Cosmogramma and 2019’s Flamagra, in particular), embracing the droning foreboding of seminal soundtracks from Blade Runner to Dune. Like 2024’s Spirit Box, which was inspired by Ellison revisiting David Lynch’s Twin Peaks, ASH takes its influence from the history of film score epics. “INTRIGUE AND WINDOW” creeps along with horror-inspired synths and rumbling bass, while “A CURIOUS MIND” is built around the atmospheric and textural strings that accent so many iconic moments throughout cinematic history.
