Laurindo Almeida

Brazilian guitarist and composer (1917-1995)

Laurindo Almeida was a Brazilian guitarist and composer. He authored a series of guitar instruction books that have been used worldwide. Almeida released recordings of classical repertoire by composers such as J.S. Bach, Fryderyk Chopin, Claude Debussy, and Joaquín Rodrigo, and recordings of works by Brazilian composers Heitor Villa-Lobos, Radamés Gnattali , and Alfredo Vianna.


He released albums such as  Classical Current and collaborated with Sammy Davis Jr. on the album Sammy Davis Jr. Sings Laurindo Almeida Plays. Almeida's most popular songs include The Lamp Is Low and The Girl From Ipanema (Garota de Ipanema) / Manha de Carnaval. He also appeared in the 1954 film A Star Is Born.
