

Michael Phelps
American swimmer
Michael Phelps is a former American swimmer. He trained under coach Bob Bowman at the North Baltimore Aquatic Club. Phelps made history by becoming the youngest American male swimmer in 68 years when he competed in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. By the age of 17, Phelps had set five world records. He set a world record in the 200-metre butterfly event at the 2001 World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, and then beat his own record shortly after. He won eight medals at the 2004 Athens Olympics - six gold and two bronze - tying Aleksandr Dityatin for the most medals won in a single Olympic Games.
