Ethel Merman was an American actress and singer (1908-1984). Starting in the 1930s, she played many lead roles on Broadway, including Annie Oakley in Annie Get Your Gun and Mrs. Dolly Levi in Hello, Dolly! She was also an acclaimed film actress, appearing in movies such as Call Me Madam, Kid Millions, Strike Me Pink, and It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.


Her belt-it-out rendition of the title song from There's No Business Like Show Business, where she starred alongside Marilyn Monroe, became a powerful anthem of the entertainment industry. Merman also popularized songs by George Gershwin, Cole Porter, and Irving Berlin. Some of her most popular songs include How Deep Is the Ocean?, I Get a Kick Out of You, and Dearie with Ray Bolger.
