Lionel Hampton

American jazz musician (1908–2002)

Lionel Hampton was an American jazz musician (1908-2002). He joined the famous Benny Goodman Quartet in the late 1930s and was one of the first major artists to use the vibraphone as a solo instrument.


Hampton released Big Bands Are Back! with Woody Herman and Count Basie, as well as The Complete Lionel Hampton Quartets and Quintets with Oscar Peterson . Hampton is known for popular songs including Mingus Fingers, On the Sunny Side of the Street, and Stardust. He appeared in the films Pennies from Heaven, A Song Is Born, and the documentary Rock 'n' Roll Revue.
