If you have ever loved a Pitbull song—any Pitbull song at all—then the Miami-hailing MC’s 14th studio album PITCOIN is for you. The project clocks in at a whopping 24 tracks; boasts guests as diverse as Enrique Iglesias, NeYo, Kiss, Lil Jon, Zion, Akon, AFROJACK, and Bon Jovi; and is rife with the kind of never-let-the-party-die energy that transformed a slick-talking “little chico from the 305” into Mr. Worldwide. If you were in any way thrown by the album’s name, don’t be. There are little to no references to cryptocurrency or even investing, unless of course we’re talking about the time and energy one needs to let loose, Miami-style. We hear about that in the songs that feature the MC’s beloved home city in the title—“Damn I Love Miami” and “MIA Anthem”—either of which sounds ideal for soundtracking University of Miami football recruiting videos. (Both lend themselves to a hard sell on Miami life.) You needn’t be from or even near South Beach to see an ROI from PITCOIN, however. Pitbull is the kind of party captain happy to meet you where you are, whether that’s deeply in need of Latin-diaspora-referencing pop raps (“Melao,” “Tamo Bien,” “Qué Calor”), dabbling in overtly caribeño dance sounds (salsa on “Tremenda Salsita” and bachata on “Pa’ Los Envidiosos”), yearning for a Latino-crunk revival like Lil Jon-orchestrated hits past (“Satalanaaa,” “No Te Hagas”), fiending for classic house samples (“Gringa Repartera”), needing to party hard without fear of judgment (“Drink Alone”), feeling nostalgic for pioneering MCs Sugarhill Gang (“123 Back It Up”), or, maybe most impressively, in the mood for classic rock (“Reach for the Stars,” “Now or Never”). Some might call including so many disparate moods something of a gamble, but it’s like Pitbull himself says on “In the Bahamas”: “Life is a pair of dice/You gotta roll ’em in order to live in paradise.”
