On his fourth studio album, Brett Young wants to get vulnerable. Shirtless and steely-eyed on the LP’s cover, the California-born country star appropriately titled this collection 2.0, not hitting restart so much as showing that he’s leveled up since first finding fame with his self-titled 2017 debut. Produced by Jimmy Robbins (Maren Morris, Charles Kelley) and Dann Huff (Rascal Flatts, Keith Urban), 2.0 opens with “Drink with You,” a mature cautionary tale about the slippery slope of sipping too much around an ex-flame. Lady A joins Young on “Who I Do It For,” a sweet and sentimental portrait of parenthood with rich harmonies and flourishes of pedal steel. “Full House” is another celebration of family life, with Young sounding especially soulful as he sings of “sticky fingerprints down the hallway” and “teddy bears up and down the staircase.” George Birge joins Young on “You Don’t Know What You’re Missing,” a delicate ballad about trading late-night benders for bedtime stories. Young closes the project with “In Case You Didn’t Know 2.0,” a reworking of his 2017 love song that features duet vocals from up-and-comer Hannah McFarland.
