Johnny Griffin

American musician (1928–2008)

Johnny Griffin was an American jazz saxophonist. He co-led the tough tenors band with Eddie Lockjaw Davis in the late 50s and worked with Thelonious Monk multiple times during this period. Griffin was a member of the Clarke-Boland Big Band from 1967 to 1968. He released the albums A Blowin’ Session, Introducing Johnny Griffin, and an extended version of The Congregation. Among his most popular songs are The Turk’s Bolero and Nice and Easy. Griffin appeared in the documentary Thelonious Monk: Straight No Chaser and passed away in 2008.
