- Moss & Freud Drama · Coming 2 July

In 2001, Kate Moss revealed to Dazed & Confused magazine that she would most like to be painted by Lucian Freud, one of the greatest painters of the 20th century. Kate finds herself in a rut — trapped in endless cycles of travel and the fashion world’s focus on surface-level concerns. Convinced by her friend Bella Freud, she meets Lucian Freud at the National Gallery, where they engage in a probing conversation. Continued self-destructive behavior and apathy toward work eventually lead Kate to Lucian’s Holland Park studio. Within its intimate confines, Kate takes the initiative and poses nude — an opportunity to reveal her true self. Being naked proves triggering, reminding her of past exploitation. Lucian diffuses her fear with a well-executed headstand. As the sessions reignite Kate’s sense of purpose and stability, Lucian begins to unravel. The devotion he gives to the portrait evolves into an obsession with Kate, heightened by her resemblance to Lady Caroline, the wife who deserted him. One hazy, opium-infused afternoon, Lucian recounts that painful relationship to Kate, culminating in him tattooing her — both the consummation of and farewell to their love affair. When Kate returns, Lucian’s frustrations erupt into rage, and he accuses her of being on drugs. An upset Kate reveals she isn’t — she is pregnant. Lucian is stunned. He knows it is time to let go of another woman who, like Caroline, cannot remain with him. Months later, a heavily pregnant Kate walks up the studio path. Inside, Lucian unveils the finished portrait. It is unmistakably her — except for one thing: her pregnancy bump has been omitted. Nine years later, Kate returns to Holland Park to visit a frail Lucian, confined to his deathbed. She introduces him to her daughter, Lila Grace — a child she believes she would not have had without Lucian’s nurturing influence. Kate lies beside the weary artist; a man finally reconciled with his mortality.
