It’s fitting that days removed from the 20th anniversary of his death, three rap legends made this vision a reality. Rakim, Masta Killa, and Kurupt are all hip-hop hall-of-famers in their own right: Rakim changed rap by popularizing multisyllabic flows with heady subject matter; Masta Killa always held his own both in the Wu-Tang Clan and on solo efforts; and Kurupt was one of the most formidable spitters on Death Row Records. It’d be easy for a crew of rappers in their 50s to use this opportunity to complain about the state of the game, but there isn’t an inkling of resentment here—just gratitude to be around each other and excitement to still show their skills. Over co-production by Rakim (who first tried his hand behind the boards for his 2024 solo album G.O.Ds NETWORK - REB7RTH) and Nick Wiz, each MC delivers the signatures that made them great: Rakim’s quiet confidence, Masta Killa’s dense wordplay, and Kurupt’s combination of West Coast swagger and technique that’s usually associated with NYC. The collaborative energy is further solidified with guest appearances by other OGs like KRS-One, Kool G Rap, Ghostface Killah, Raekwon, and Snoop Dogg.
