The title of Tom Morello’s fourth solo album under his own name could be read a number of ways. A comment on the ravenous nature of no-consequences capitalism? A vision of the socialist utopia he’s always fought for? Or maybe it’s the fact the album seems designed to appeal to every type of fan he’s acquired across his eclectic career. In some respects, Everyone Gets Everything They Want picks up where his guest-heavy, EDM-dabbling triple-album series The Atlas Underground left off: The Beartooth-assisted “Everything Burns” finds Morello continuing to modernize the heavy-metal hip-hop sound he pioneered in the ’90s, while the KNEECAP collab “Unconquered” serves as a passing of the torch between two generations of punk-rap agitators. But he also satiates old-school heads with a return to the classic Rage Against the Machine sound on “Adjourn It,” with System of a Down’s Serj Tankian ably inheriting Zack de la Rocha’s megaphone (while Morello’s teenage son Roman thrashes accordingly on guitar). And the smoky-voiced folk-singer persona he introduced on his late-2000s Nightwatchman releases is also present here: “The Last Rung on the Ladder” and “They Can’t Kill Us All” are quiet pleas for the rabble to keep raging as the machines get bigger and more oppressive. Our Favorite Moment: “I Am Not Yours to Command”—even when you take his history of genre-hopping into account, it’s still amazing to hear Morello go all-in on a Leonard Cohen-style piano ballad.
