Now signed with the refurbished Motown imprint known as Tamla Records, renowned R&B artist Eric Bellinger follows up his 2025 Afrobeats-inspired outing It All Makes Sense with this self-titled affair. Putting out an eponymous album after more than a decade’s worth of full-length releases can denote a certain stature, perhaps even a possible rebirth for the singer. Instead, what he brings to these proceedings has less to do with experimentation than it does affirmation. Not surprisingly for a 40-something songsmith, his lyrics here reflect a relatable maturity, with emotional musings on manhood and all that encompasses. There’s a vulnerability to opener “I Need Help,” a soulful plea for those who lovingly carry burdens for the benefit of their families. That sentiment echoes with a sense of wellbeing amid the comforts of “Cry in Front of You” and the backwards-glancing gratitude of “Thank You for Telling Me No.” As it turns out, he’s more than content at home, where his heart resides, evidenced by “How Could I Not” and the resonant “Fatherhood.” Still, as much as his words and that unambiguously smooth vocal delivery may connect on a personal level, Bellinger is a star and thus subject to stardom’s pros and cons. That comes through on “Heavy Is the Crown,” during which he delves into a work-life balance that few ever get the chance to contend with. Our Favorite Track: As much as the album centers Bellinger’s deeply felt and complex masculinity, the devotional ode to his mother “Just Like You” provides a truly touching centerpiece that will probably make you want to call yours on the phone.
