Premiering in Hamilton, Ontario, in the spring of 2026, It’s a Good Life If You Don’t Weaken is so much more than a mere jukebox-musical celebration of The Tragically Hip. Set in 2002, it tells the story of a dissident journalist fleeing his native Iraq to start life anew in Ontario, and in the process, it transforms the Hip’s repertoire of Canadian cottage-rock classics into an impressionistic soundtrack for an immigrant’s journey. Naturally, the cast—which includes seasoned Toronto singer-songwriters like Talia Schlanger and Sameer Cash—delivers gritty rockers like “New Orleans Is Sinking” and “Fireworks” with added theatrical gusto to reach the back rows in the balcony, while the tricked-out arrangements—courtesy of Los Lobos veteran Steve Berlin and Come from Away musical director Bob Foster—cast the action in a soulful, E Street-worthy glow. (For this album recording, they also called in some special guest singers who weren’t part of the original cast, like folk-soul siren Allison Russell on a hymnlike reading of “Wheat Kings” and Canadian country phenom Owen Riegling for a roadhouse-ready “Boots or Hearts.”) But even heard outside of its original stage context, these ensemble renditions reaffirm that The Tragically Hip’s songs are Canada’s de facto national anthems, and—true to the spirit of the musical—everyone is welcome to join in. Our Favorite Track: “It’s a Good Life If You Don’t Weaken.” Once a muted ballad that served as the tender emotional core of 2002’s In Violet Light, it’s reborn here as a showstopper whose East-meets-West musical fusion functions as an audio analog to the play’s transatlantic storyline.
