Bernice Johnson Reagon
American singer, composer, and activist (1942–2024)
Bernice Johnson Reagon was an American singer, composer, and activist (1942-2024). She released albums including Folk Songs: The South, Give Your Hands to Struggle, and River of Life: Harmony One. Her most popular songs include We Are Climbing Jacob’s Ladder, This Little Light of Mine, and Eyes On the Prize (Hold On) with James Horner. Reagon founded the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee Freedom Singers in the '60s and served as the vocal director of the D.C. Black Repertory Theatre. She was a Distinguished Professor at American University and Curator emeritus at the Smithsonian Institution.
