The Cincinnati native’s work in James Brown’s seminal backing band and subsequently in the groundbreaking Parliament-Funkadelic cemented his legend, without question. Now a septuagenarian hall-of-famer, he remains steadfast in his refusal to let his past speak for him. The latest entry in his still-growing catalog, Album of the Year #1 Funkateer touches on several aspects of his broad discography while celebrating all that it has inspired. G-funk era veterans Daz Dillinger and Kurupt come through for groove-laden cuts like “Bootdullivan Is Soopafly” and “Fishnets,” while Snoop Dogg himself demonstrates his heir-to-the-throne bona fides on “Hundo P.” On “The JB’s Tribute Pastor P,” Collins reconnects with former bandmates including the now-departed drum icons John Starks and Clyde Stubblefield, adding handpicked rapper Harry Mack, who adds greater context via bars and flows. Throughout the album, Collins calls upon his litany of pseudonyms, letting Bedroom Bootsy out to vibe with Musiq Soulchild on “Reach the Zone” and reviving Zillatron to pay homage to left-field guitar god Buckethead on “Barbie T & Me.”
