Diarra Kilpatrick, creator, showrunner, and star of the Paramount+ series ‘Diarra From Detroit,’ sits down with KevOnStage and That Chick Angel for an unfiltered conversation about what it really takes to build a television show as a Black woman in Hollywood. Diarra shares her journey from growing up in Section 8 housing in Detroit to attending NYU Tisch during 9/11, to clawing her way through the entertainment industry with no safety net. With a brother who served as mayor of Detroit (Kwame Kilpatrick) and a father whose federal indictment dried up family resources, Diarra had to be relentless just to survive, let alone create her own show. She breaks down the stop-and-start process of getting ‘Diarra From Detroit’ made, the budget realities of independent television, casting legends like Morris Chestnut, Phylicia Rashad, Method Man, Bokeem Woodbine, and Glynn Turman when you cannot afford top-name talent, and the network battles over everything from casting to how she wears her own hair. The conversation also covers why she chose the detective genre to put Black women in spaces they rarely occupy, the mental health toll of being a creator who also has to market her own show, navigating social media negativity, her interracial marriage, and why supporting Black-created content matters now more than ever. With appearances by KevOnStage's disastrous audition tape, Angel getting cut from ‘Churchy’ twice, and a heated debate about skin tones, this episode is equal parts inspiration, industry insider knowledge, and pure comedy.Stream ‘Diarra From Detroit’ Seasons 1 and 2 now on Paramount+.#DiarraFromDetroit #HeresTheThing #KevOnStage #ThatChickAngel #BlackHollywood #BlackWomenInTV #ParamountPlus #Detroit #Showrunner #blackcontentcreatorsSign up right now with promo code KEVONSTAGE.
