Coming from a group once synonymous with orchestral bombast, throat-shredding catharsis, and glammy theatrics, Arcade Fire’s 2025 release Pink Elephant was an atypically subdued, soul-searching set born from a period of intraband upheaval and public scandal. This companion release invites us to marinate in that meditative mood a little while longer, by elevating the sort of ambient interstitials scattered throughout the Pink Elephant tracklist to feature attraction. Open Your Heart or Die Trying begins with an expanded eight-minute “director’s cut” version of the namesake track that opens Pink Elephant, setting the vaporous, Vangelis-esque tone for an album that bears little formal similarity to its predecessor, but is in subliminal conversation with it. “Season of Change” takes its title from the original’s “Year of the Snake,” whose core melody and optimistic spirit float through the track’s synth mist like a barely perceptible apparition. “Trust Fall” resituates the trembling guitar line of Pink Elephant’s indie-disco centerpiece, “Circle of Trust,” into the middle of an ice-covered dronescape, like a lone flower poking out of the tundra. And where Pink Elephant’s emotional peak, “I Love Her Shadow,” saw Win Butler and Régine Chassagne declare they were “breaking into heaven,” the track here named after that phrase imagines the peaceful, cloud-parting soundtrack they’ll hear once they get there.
