The title of Bonnie “Prince” Billy’s stirring and emotive new album can be taken literally. We Are Together Again describes just that—a communal gathering of like-minded musicians and friends united under the banner of song. The project’s founder, Will Oldham, and his tight-knit crew of collaborators recorded the album at End of an Ear Studios in Louisville, Kentucky, and the rich tapestry of voices that make their way onto the collection can be heard from the opening chorus of the album’s first song, “Why is the Lion?” Woodwinds dance around the songwriter’s voice as a bevy of harmonies dive in and out of the composition like birds spotting an afternoon snack in the water. At times featuring a gaggle of instruments and vocalists, at others led by little besides Oldham’s voice and guitar, We Are Together Again displays the full scope of Bonnie “Prince” Billy’s mastery. It’s a singular style, though Will Oldham would hesitate to take all the credit.
