The Game accomplished a great deal with 2005’s The Documentary, a multiplatinum debut that advanced the preceding decade’s gangsta-rap aesthetic and nationally reaffirmed Los Angeles’ coastal importance. It makes sense then that, roughly every 10 years since, the Compton native has returned with a formal sequel—first with 2015’s The Documentary 2 / 2.5 and once more with this robust third volume. Still a deadly serious MC with strong stances and an abiding respect for the streets, he starts off The Documentary III with the ruthless lyrical onslaught “Geezus.” From there, he embarks on a near-comprehensive survey of where he’s from and what he does best, riding a G-funk-informed groove on the audacious “20 Deep” and confronting the dark side on the harrowing “Nothing 2 Hide.” Ever committed to the craft of rap, he shares anecdotes of note to a Statik Selektah beat on “The Pen” and gloomily contemplates over Conductor Williams’ moody production on “Meet the Parents.” The Game’s guest list includes plenty of locally sourced heavyweights, from the tragically departed Drakeo the Ruler on “Geekin” to a resplendent Snoop Dogg on an immensely gratifying Cool & Dre flip dubbed “Love It or Hate It.” With “The Part,” he orchestrates an unmissable California rap posse cut with the multigenerational roster of AZ Chike, Lefty Gunplay, and YG. A handful of features come from those who appeared on prior Documentary installments, including Kanye West on self-confidence seminar “40 Nights” and Lil Wayne on the triumphant “Steppers.” Still, he makes one of the album’s biggest statements alongside Drake on “No Brakes,” riding alongside his proverbial twin with unapologetic swagger.
