Miranda Lambert’s 10th studio album arrived while the celebrated singer-songwriter was making history: Ella Langley’s “Choosin’ Texas,” which Lambert co-wrote, notched its record-breaking 24th week atop the Hot 100 just days before Crisco dropped. Lambert has long been one of country’s best songwriters, and on Crisco she flaunts the power of her pen and the versatility of her winsome voice. “Cowgirl Curtsy” is a tear-in-the-beer lament about “fallin’ for a boy that hurts me,” while the determined “Till The Going’s Gone” has a nervous energy that matches its escapist lyrics. Lambert has a couple of well-chosen dance partners on Crisco: Langley drops in for the vagabond-cowgirl ode “Snakeskin Boots,” and well-traveled troubadour Chris Stapleton harmonizes blissfully with her on the synth-swaddled “A Song to Sing.” That track is followed up by Lambert’s take on Jim Croce’s 1974 hit “I’ll Have to Say I Love You In a Song,” a nod to the great songwriters of yesteryear from one of modern pop’s biggest talents.
