Timbaland has spent decades producing for all-time great artists like JAŸ-Z, Missy Elliott, and Justin Timberlake, but his decision to channel his faith into his craft materialized in a partnership with 1K Phew, a gospel rapper who won a GMA Dove Award for No Church in a While, his 2021 album with Lecrae. Their joint album SEVEN TRUMPETS features the distinctively quirky bounce that Timbo has perfected, with 1K Phew rhymes full of dexterous flows and clever punchlines. The Atlanta rapper once fittingly described himself as “saved not soft,” and 1K Phew channels his praise through confidence and swagginess more than preachiness. “WALK ON WATER” shrugs off haters while making references to biblical characters like Lazarus and an apostle’s attempt to walk on water with Jesus (“Walking like Peter, I’m out the boat/First I was sinking, he let me float”), while “NEW HEAVEN” has boasts of relying on God to settle his disputes before a feature by Memphis rap icon Project Pat, who has also forayed into gospel recently. “SCRIPTURES” features Timbo flipping the classic Cedarmont Kids’ “Jesus Loves the Little Children” into a legitimate slapper, another testament to his infectiousness that’s both unmistakably human and weirdly extraterrestrial. “This ain’t magic/It’s God flow,” 1K Phew later insists.
