Cumbia has been part of Thalía’s repertoire since the 1990s—no small part of what made her albums like Amor a La Mexicana and En éxtasis so successful. Decades deep into her storied career, the Latin pop megastar now dedicates an entire project to the sound. A largely collaborative affair, the cleverly named Todo Suena Mejor En Cumbia presents nine songs, inclusive of some delightful covers, expressing the genre in her own way. From the lovestruck opener “Ojitos Mexicanos” through the closing passions of “Yo Me Lo Busqué” with Los Ángeles Azules, she sticks to the heartfelt spirit of this music’s history while delivering vibrant performances throughout. An inventive reworking of ABBA’s “Dancing Queen” retrofits new rhythms and bilingual elan into the ubiquitous classic, while her take on “Todo, Todo, Todo” brings no less than Yuri herself into the fold. Not surprisingly, Thalía meshes well with other bands brought into the studio, including Mexicali pop act Matisse on “Me Fuí Queriéndote” and Culiacán corridos ensemble Grupo Maximo Grado on “Aquí Es Mi Lugar.”
